India, officially the Republic of India, is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country and the most populous democracy in the world. In terms of size, India has a total area of 3,287,590 sq km which is slightly more than one-third the size of the US. It has 2,973,190 sq km land area and 314,400 sq km water area. Four major world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated here, while Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam arrived in the first millennium CE and shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by the British East India Company from the early eighteenth century and colonised by the United Kingdom from the mid-nineteenth century, India became a modern nation state in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by widespread non-violent resistance. The population of India is approximately 1,147,995,898. The population density of it is 329/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.578%. Most of India's people belong to Hindu religion. Official and most common language of those people are Hindi and English. It has 72% of Indo-Aryan, 25% of Dravidian and 3% of Mongoloid people.
