| Bangladesh is a country in South Asia. It is bordered by India on all sides except for a small border with Burma to the far southeast and by the Bay of Bengal to the south. Together with the Indian state of West Bengal, it makes up the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal. The name Bangladesh means 'Country of Bengal' in the official Bengali language. In terms of size, Bangladesh has total area of 147,570 sq km. 7% of total area is water. It is slightly smaller than Iowa. The population of Bahrain is approximately 150,448,340 as of 2007. The population density of it is 1045 per sq km. It has of population growth rate of 2.022%. 83% of Bangladeshis follow Muslim religion, 16% Hindu and 1% rest. Languages spoken are Bangla (the official language) and also English. The exact origin of the word 'Bangla' or 'Bengal' is unknown, though it is believed to be derived from Bang, the Dravidian-speaking tribe that settled in the area around the year 1000 BC. Europeans began to set up trading posts in the area of Bangladesh in the 16th century; eventually the British came to dominate the region and it became part of British India. In 1947, West Pakistan and East Bengal (both primarily Muslim) separated from India (largely Hindu) and jointly became the new country of Pakistan. East Pakistan seceded from its union with West Pakistan in 1971 and was renamed Bangladesh The economy has grown 5-6% over the past few years despite inefficient state-owned enterprises, delays in exploiting natural gas resources, insufficient power supplies, and slow implementation of economic reforms. Bangladesh remains a poor, overpopulated, and inefficiently-governed nation. Although more than half of GDP is generated through the service sector, nearly two-thirds of Bangladeshis are employed in the agriculture sector, with rice as the single-most-important product. Bangladesh's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2008 estimate is approximately $222.4 billion with GDP of $1,374 per capita. |
