| Info |
| Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean, eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, east of Haiti. In terms of size, it has 48,730 sq km of total area which is slightly more than twice the size of New Hampshire. It has 48,380 sq km of land area and 350 sq km of water area. The population of it is approximately 9,507,133. The population density of it is 201/sq km. It has 1.495% of population growth rate. 95% of Dominican people belong to Roman Catholic religion. Official language of those people is Spanish. Explored and claimed by Christopher COLUMBUS on his first voyage in 1492, the island of Hispaniola became a springboard for Spanish conquest of the Caribbean and the American mainland. In 1697, Spain recognized French dominion over the western third of the island, which in 1804 became Haiti. The remainder of the island, by then known as Santo Domingo, sought to gain its own independence in 1821. Finally it attained independence as the Dominican Republic in 1844. In term of economy, it is highly dependent upon the US, the source of nearly three-fourths of exports, and remittances represent about a tenth of GDP, equivalent to almost half of exports and three-quarters of tourism receipts. Agriculture remains the most important sector in terms of domestic consumption and is in second place, behind mining, in terms of export earnings. Its Purchasing power parity domestic product (GDP) as of 2007 estimate is approximately $61.79 billion with GDP of $7,000 per capita. |
