| Panama, officially the Republic of Panama, is the southernmost country of Central America. Situated on an isthmus, some categorize it as a transcontinental nation connecting the north and south part of America. It borders Costa Rica to the north-west, Colombia to the south-east, the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. It is an international business center and is also a transit country. In terms of size, Panama has a total area of 78,200 sq km which is slightly smaller than South Carolina. It has 75,990 sq km land area and 2,210 sq km water area. Explored and settled by the Spanish in the 16th century, Panama broke with Spain in 1821 and joined a union of Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela - named the Republic of Gran Colombia. When the latter dissolved in 1830, Panama remained part of Colombia. With US backing, Panama seceded from Colombia in 1903 and promptly signed a treaty with the US allowing for the construction of a canal and US sovereignty over a strip of land on either side of the structure. The population of Panama is approximately 3,292,693. The population density of it is 43/sq km. It has a population growth rate of 1.528%. Most of Panama's people belong to Roman Catholic religion. The official and most common language of those people is Spanish. It has 70% of Mestizo and rests are West Indian, white and Amerindian people. Panama's dollarized economy rests primarily on a well-developed services sector that accounts for two-thirds of GDP. Services include operating the Panama Canal, banking, the Colon Free Zone, insurance, container ports, flagship registry, and tourism. Panama's gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2005 estimate is approximately $14.363 billion with GDP of $2,418 per capita. |
